Dr. H. & Friends is a philanthropic initiative founded by Dr. James J. Hairston that brings together community members, alumni, and partners to support education, wellness, and equity. Rooted in the belief that collective giving can transform lives, the initiative funds scholarships such as the Kimberly Lanar White Memorial Scholarship, organizes community drives like Christmas in July, and provides resources to uplift historically underserved students and families. More than a campaign, Dr. H. & Friends reflects Dr. Hairston’s vision of blending scholarship, service, and community care to create lasting impact.

Dr. James J. Hairston is deeply committed to community engagement through service that advances equity, youth development, and social justice. He serves with the Guilford County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC), which focuses on reducing juvenile delinquency and strengthening community safety by funding and supporting evidence-based programs for at-risk youth and their families. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Interactive Resource Center (IRC), Guilford County’s only day resource center for individuals experiencing homelessness, providing essential services such as housing assistance, employment support, healthcare access, and basic needs. Dr. Hairston also volunteers in Title I schools, where he works to support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds through mentorship, encouragement, and advocacy, reinforcing his belief in education as a powerful tool for empowerment and long-term community transformation. Dr. Hairston is the immediate past president of the Black Alumni Collective at Greensboro College. He is a member of the alumni association at Greensboro College.
